movie review...

SO, we all know i love me some tim burton but i must say i was pretty nervous about watching this movie. oh, right. musical. i, of course listened to the soundtrack in high school theater along with every other popular musicals back in the day. (phantom of the opera, les miserables, chess and so on.) i knew the words to the songs and i would even sing along. but i never really knew the storyline. i knew it was going to be violent, i mean it's about a murderous barber. just how violent i wasn't sure. i was hoping for a "sleepy hollow" kind of violent but it ended up being a "close my eyes for half the film" violent. don't get me wrong, this movie was impeccably done. the singing was remarkable for the actors (most have never sung. including jonny depp) since the scores are very intricate and complicated rhythms, they were spot on. the acting was fantastic as well. tim burton did an amazing job once again making the living look non-living in a grey, dark london landscape. the violence was prevalent and VERY graphic. the smart thing that tim burton did was he made the throat cutting look pretty fake. i assume he needed to do this in order for it to not be so hard to watch since there was SO much of it. i still had my eyes closed none then less because let's face it, i still don't want to see that. fake looking or not. i also loved the comic relief that was strategically placed through out the movie to help bring down the intensity. tim burton always knows how to do this with great effect. my favorite was the scene with mrs. lovett singing to sweeney todd about living by the sea side. the look on johnny depp's face was perfect. i had a really good laugh. i did enjoy the movie but as the mister said last night, "it was very well done, but i don't ever want to see that again." i have to agree.
